CURRICULUM PROVISION 2016-2017

The school is a Curriculum Award School which makes it one of a select band in the British Isles in that it meets the exacting standards of the Trustees of the Schools’ Curriculum Award.

THE CURRICULUM

The school defines the curriculum as the sum total of experiences, planned or unplanned, explicit or implicit, made available to the individual pupil by the school,which contributes to his/her development in terms of knowledge, skills,attitudes and values. Subjects studied in the Junior School are:

The NI Curriculum is now fully embedded in the school. This curriculum is designed to give each pupil a wide variety of educational experiences and challenges in order to develop their skills and understanding.  This is set within avigorous framework to improve literacy and numeracy, the two main building blocks for future academic success.

Form classes at this stage are based on mixed ability, although facilities exist for streaming, setting, or banding particular subjects if there are sound educational reasons for doing so.


SENIOR SCHOOL
The Senior School(Years 11 and 12) complies with the requirements of the N I Curriculum to ensure the pupils have a broad, balanced and coherent education. All pupils do the following subjects:

SIXTH FORM PROVISION

The college offers a range of subjects including GCE ‘A’ levels as well as BTEC National Awards. Now up to 40% of our Year 12 students return to Year 13 each year.  To increase the educational options inrelation to the breadth of choice at Post 16 level St Joseph’s firmly believes in all young people having optimal choice in order to enhance their career prospects. As a result the College plays a vital role in the Coleraine Area Learning Partnership where pupils can select from an extended range of subjects offered from within all of the colleges in the local area.
